Description | Photographs show people, places, and activities in Sikkim, India. Subjects depicted include Buddhist monks and lamas, ceremonial dances and other activities at monasteries such as Pemayangtse, Enchey, Phadong, and Rumtek; people working such as farmers, weavers, painters, canning factory workers, a tailor, a dentist and a silversmith; and the royal palace and chapel at Gangtok and the royal family including King Palden Thondup Namgyal, Queen Hope Cooke and their family. Others depicted include Rinchen Namgyal Lachungpa, Shinglay Lama and Athlinga (Rai Bahadur Sonam Tobden). Also shown are the villages and people of Singhik and Lachung, the mountains of Kānchenjunga, Ralang Hot Springs, and the Gangtok bazaar as well as different ethnic groups such as the Kirati (Kiranti), Lepcha, Nepalese, Bhotia people. Photographs also show the material culture of Sikkim including religious paintings, ceremonial masks, jewelry and carpets and events such as the coronation of King Palden Namgyal and Queen Hope in 1965. Color images (subdivision -7) include a display of clothing designed by Hope Cooke at Bergdorf Goodman department store, New York City, "Sikkim: Hidden Kingdom" book on display in a New York bookstore, and the wedding of Princess Yanchen Dolma and Simon Abraham in 1979. Subdivision -7 also includes digital scan reference surrogates of ceremonial dances in Gangtok by Tse Ten Tashi. |
