Description | Most stereographs in the LOT are from the series "Indians of the Colorado Valley" taken as part of the John Wesley Powell Survey sponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey. They focus on the Ute Indians, also known as the Uintah Indians. Photographs were taken near the Uintah Ute Indian Agency in Utah. Most show individual or small groups, including portraits of the chief and war chief of the Utes and stereographs of families. Some show living quarters and a watch tower. Others show younger Utes together in the landscape, on horseback, or with a dog, children and babies. One stereo, from "Views on Green River. CaƱon of Lodore series," shows James C. Pilling sitting at the "Gate of Lodore" canyon, in Utah or Colo. |
