Description | Photographs show tobacco auction. Warehouses. Farmers bringing "sticks" of tobacco leaves in autos and trailers. White and Negro farmers waiting overnight in camp rooms, in warehouses, for auction to commence. "Hands" (leaves tied in bunches) are removed from sticks, graded and put on large, shallow split wood baskets for auctioning. Selling. "Bookmen" for the warehouse, on either side of the row of bakets, follow each sale and check tobacco prices after auction. Tobacco covered with old quilts and sacks to be kept moist and "in order" before sale. Farmers receiving checks. |
