Description | Photographs show mining town during the Depression. Formerly the largest coal center in the state with 16 mines, currently reduced to 2. Citizens lost homes, which were demolished for scrap lumber. The resulting house shortage threw a large part of the unemployed population into shacks built of refuse abandoned farm buildings and other improvised shelter. Families on relief.
