Description | Civil War scenes, most of which are represented in the Civil War Views collection in the Prints & Photographs Division. Includes views of Professor Lowe's military reconnaissance balloon; the Marshall House and a slave pen in Alexandria, Virginia; Battery Rodgers; a group of black soldiers at Fort Sedgwick, Rogers Group statues, and slaves (including scarred back of Gordon, a slave). Portraits of Union Generals include Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, and David Farragut. Confederate Generals include John Brown Gordon, Fitzhugh Lee, and John Bell Hood. Views of Gettysburg, Old Capitol Prison, various towns, railroads, battlefields. Some slides are hand-colored, for example, the U.S. Capitol by Joseph Boggs Beale. One slide shows Sam A. Cooley ("U.S. Photographer, Department of the South") with his camera and equipment wagon. Also includes a copy of a drawing by E.B. Thompson, Washington, of "President Lincoln at Fort Stevens, July 12, 1864." |
