Description | Cartoon shows the white Southern Rhodesia Prime Minister Ian Smith, talking to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Smith is preparing to transfer water from a full barrel labeled "White Minority Rule" to an empty barrel labeled "Black Majority Rule," but his scoop, labeled "Transfer of Power," has large holes in the bottom. Five black men, standing in the background look disgusted. Under Smith's leadership, Southern Rhodesia declared its independence from Great Britain in 1965. Only after international economic sanctions brought the country to the brink of disaster in 1976 did he reluctantly accept a plan proposed by Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and British Prime Minister James Callaghan to transfer power to the black majority within two years. As Valtman predicted, the transfer did not go smoothly and it was a number of years before the country became fully independent under its new name, Zimbabwe. |
