In 1962, the United States discovered that the Soviet Union was installing missiles in Cuba. During the ensuing "Cuban Missile Crisis," President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) announced that he was placing a blockade around Cuba to prevent the delivery of any more weapons. Khrushchev threatened war if Russian ships were stopped but finally backed down and agreed to remove the missiles. |
