Description | Cartoon shows United Arab Republic leader and head of Syria, Gamal Nasser, landing in a sitting position with his legs sprawled before him. His demitasse cup is tipped over next to him. The carpet on which he had been standing, Syria, has just been wrenched from his feet and pulled out the window. Syria had been ruled by Egypt since 1958, but on September 28, 1961, a revolutionary council seized control of the country, wresting it away from Nasser. On September 30, 1961, the new government ordered Egyptians out of the country. |
