Description | Yardley's humorous editorial cartoon draws upon Japanese woodcuts and the tradition of harikari by military leaders in the face of public defeat. A Japanese samurai, identified as "Jap militarists" prepares to impale himself upon a giant sword, while "Uncle Joe" Stalin watches from the East, and figures representing the United States, Britain and China wave from the West. The title is a play on Gilbert and Sullivan's opera The Mikado. This innovative drawing, comments on Japanese rejection of the terms of unconditional surrender established by the Allies in July 1945. |
