Description | World War II cartoon shows Mussolini as a diver climbing into a tiny boat (named "Mare Nostrum") containing a naval officer and a seaman. A ship sinks in the background. "Mare Nostrum" was a Latin name for the Mediterraneum when the Roman Empire controlled all the lands around it. Such control was one of Mussolini's prime military objectives. By 1942, however, the Italian leader's grandiose plans had suffered severe setbacks, and the British had destroyed a significant portion of the Italian fleet. |
