Description | World War II cartoon shows Hitler as an artist staring dejectedly at a painting of himself blowing a trumpet and hold a palm branch. The painting, signed and dated "Adolf 1939," is labeled "Final viktoria in 1940." The date has been crossed out and later dates, "1941, 1942, 194 ..., 19 ...." have been painted in and crossed out. Paintings in the background show Hitler shivering, labeled "Russia, Brrrrrr!" and Hitler as a Viking, labeled "Aryan." Before embarking on his political career, Hitler had aspired to be an artist, and American cartoonists frequently used this theme. When Hitler decided to invade the Soviet Union, he was convinced that he could defeat the Russians speedily. By the end of 1942, however, his armies had bogged down, partly stymied by the ferocious Russian winter, and he was eventually forced to retreat. |
