Description | Cartoon shows British envoy Sir Stafford Cripps as a snake charmer playing a pipe (labeled "Cripps Mission to India") to a large cobra (labeled "Question of Indian Unity"). In March 1942, the British government sent Cripps to India to try to negotiate a new constitution that would have provided a measure of self-government. It was rejected by the Hindu-dominated Congress party, in part because it would have allowed the Muslims to form an independent state. |
