Description | Cartoon shows a fox reaching in vain for grapes (labeled "Editorial Support of Eisenhower") hanging over a wall. A bulletin tacked to the wall reads, "Truman and Stevenson Attack the Press." Refers to the fable by Aesop in which a fox pronounces the grapes that he cannot reach to be sour. During the 1952 presidential election, newspaper editorial pages supported Eisenhower, the Republican candidate, by a large margin. Suggests that criticism of the press by President Truman and Democratic candidate Adlai Stevenson results from resentment of this situation. |
