Description | Cartoon shows General Eisenhower sitting up in bed asking what the shooting is all about. His bedside table contains cold medicine. Outside his window, Senator Robert Taft in a ceremonial military uniform fires off a cannon, the blasts sounding: "Are you," Do you," "Have you," and "Will you." (The 21 gun salute was reserved for heads of state.) The cartoon probably reflects the fact that on April 10, 1952, the White House announced that Eisenhower was resigning his post as Supreme Commander of NATO. This was widely interpreted as meaning he would challenge Taft for the 1952 Republican presidential nomination. |
