Description | Cartoon shows President Truman as a castaway on a raft, encircled by sharks, refusing to be rescued by the seamen of a ship who are trying to throw him a life preserver (labeled "Taft-Hartley Law"). Reflects the decision of the Supreme Court on June 2, declaring the President's seizure of the steel mills, in order to avert a strike, unconstitutional. Truman had refused to invoke the Taft-Hartley Act which would have delayed the strike for 80 days. The Democrats strongly disliked the provisions of the Taft-Hartley law. |
