A good act -- if the chair doesn't slip

Description | Cartoon shows Soviet leaders Molotov, Beria, and Malenkov as theatrical knife throwers, perilously balanced, one atop the other, on two legs of a chair (labeled "Unity"). After Stalin's sudden death on March 5, these three officials emerged as the apparent triumvirate governing the Soviet Union. Suggests that the prospects of their being able to govern successfully were based on a risky foundation. The cartoonist was prescient for within a few years, all three were purged from government, and Beria had been executed. |
