Description | Cartoon shows Soviet leader Khrushchev modifying a "Wanted" poster showing Soviet leader Tito and West German chancellor Konrad Adenauer. The "Wanted" sign has been changed to "Needed" and the labels "Enemy no. 1" and "Enemy no. 2" have been changed to "Friend." During the Stalinist era, the Soviet Union had become bitterly hostile to the Yugoslav Communist government which refused to accept Soviet domination. The Soviets had also refused to recognize the newly emerging West German government. In 1955, Khrushchev abruptly softened Soviet policy, visiting Yugoslavia in May and inviting Adenauer in June to visit Moscow to discuss establishment of diplomatic relations. |
