Description | Cartoon shows Androcles (labeled "The Spirit of Dunkerque") coming to remove a splinter (labeled "Coal Crisis") from the foot of the English lion. A scarcity of coal, along with other economic problems after World War II, created an economic crisis in February 1947 to which both political parties responded by calling for a new period of self- sacrifice as epitomized by "The Spirit of Dunkerque." (Dunkerque was the legendary military operation at the beginning of World War II where the British managed to evacuate the major part of their forces from the beaches of France in the face of the German takeover.) The cartoonist, using the fable by Aesop, suggests that the British will successfully surmount this crisis as well. |
