Description | World War II cartoon shows Ananias, the famous Biblical liar, with a long white beard and a pointed hat decorated with a swastika, standing with his hand placed protectively on Hitler's shoulder. Hitler leans against an enormous copy of his book, "Mein Kampf," opened to a page reading "Propaganda is only another weapon, if a truly fearful one, in the hands of an expert. The slighter its scientific ballast, and the more it considers the emotions of the masses, the more complete its success .... It must not objectively explore any truth that favors the other side." When the Germans invaded Norway in April 1941, Hitler justified it on the grounds that he was only preempting an attack by the Allies. The cartoonist ridicules this as pure propaganda, but there was an element of truth. Although not generally known at the time, the British had briefly considered a limited invasion of the port of Narvik to block German access to Swedish iron ore. |
