Description | World War II cartoon shows a man (labeled "Anti-Lend-Lease Senator") who professes to be unbothered by the enormous figure of Mars, the God of War, sitting in his lap. Early in 1941, President Roosevelt, convinced that increased American aid was necessary if Great Britain was to survive its war with Germany, proposed a Lend-Lease program that would allow the United States to supply war materials to Britain without charge, with the general understanding that they would be paid back in kind after the war. The cartoonist pokes fun at those isolationist senators who deny there is a crisis. |
