Description | Cartoon shows a tramp, holding an emaciated Tammany tiger on a leash, looking disconsolately at a box with the bottom falling out, labeled "Tammany Income." In 1931, Thomas M. Farley, a high-ranking member of the powerful and corrupt New York City Democratic machine known as Tammany Hall, testified before an investigative commission that he kept his enormous income, derived from "savings" in a tin box. The tin box became a symbol for Tammany graft. By 1938, when Tammany had been out of power for five years, such income was no longer available. |
