Description | World War II cartoon shows an undertaker in a frock coat (labeled "Defeatist") and a hat with a black mourning band, holding a large feather (labeled "The Order of the White Feather") and wringing his hands. A large black raven (a bird of ill-omen) perches on a nearby pillar, while in the background a crowd shouts "Kamerad." A white feather was the symbol of cowardice. After Hitler's overwhelming conquest of much of Europe in 1940, some Americans became convinced that the Germans were unbeatable. The cartoonist ridicules these noninterventionists as cowards and suggests that they are aiding the German cause. |
