Description | World War II cartoon shows a large thug (labeled "Aggressor Nations") holding a baseball bat, beating up a man who tries to defend himself with a brick. A small man (labeled "Nye-Wheeler Group") looking on, says to the victim, "Say, What Are You Fighting For?" A sign reads "Britain, Greece and China Cannot Continue to Fight Unless the Administration's Lease-Lend Bill Is Passed. Sec'y Morgenthau." In early 1941, Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau strongly supported President Roosevelt's proposal of a "lend-lease" program to enable the United States to provide more war material to those countries fighting the aggression of the Axis Powers. American isolationists, including Senators Gerald P. Nye and Burton K. Wheeler, opposed the program. |
