Description | Cartoon shows a rotund German citizen hanging on to a leash encircling the waist of Hitler, who is waving a large flag with a swastika, against a background of "Jingoism," "Reaction," and "Race Hatred." On January 30, 1933, German President Paul von Hindenburg, in an effort to appease German nationalists, appointed Nazi leader, Adolph Hitler, as Chancellor in a coalition government. Hitler was already widely regarded outside Germany as a dangerous rabble rouser. The cartoonist hopes that innate German common sense will hold Hitler in check. |
