Description | Cartoon shows the Tammany Tiger snarling in his cage as a hook (labeled "Court Decision Continuing McKee as Mayor until 1934"), removes his meat (labeled "Graft, Corruption, Extravagance") from his bowl. In September 1932, Mayor Jimmy Walker, a Tammany Hall protégé facing charges of graft and corruption, resigned. To the anger of Tammany Hall, the New York Supreme Court ruled that his successor, Acting Mayor Joseph V. McKee, could stay in office until the next regularly-scheduled election in 1933. The New York Court of Appeals later reversed the decision, and in a new election, held in November 1932, a Tammany Hall candidate was elected. |
