Description | In 1953, when Senator Joseph McCarthy's investigation of communists in government was at its height, Kelly was one of the few editorial voices to speak out against his tactics. In this three-panel comic strip, Simple J. Malarkey, a vicious wildcat resembling Senator McCarthy, prepares to venture into the swamp with an axe to revenge himself on his erstwhile ally, the half-blind Mole MacCarony, who has turned on Malarky after he was pushed into a pot of tar. Another ally, the vulture, Sarcophagus MacAbre, declines to accompany Malarkey on this venture. Kelly suggests not only that McCarthy may be tripped up by his own tactics but that his allies may turn on him as well. The cartoonist was prophetic, although the Senator's downfall did not come for another year. |
