Description | Cartoon shows two highways, one a smooth straight interstate, the other a curved rocky toll road. A sign pointing toward the interstate consists of the head of a man and a hand holding a paper labeled "Senate-House Conference O.K." A second sign pointing toward the toll road also has the head of a man. A highway marker between them reads Tampa Bay-Miami. Probably refers to the U.S. Senate-House Conference in June 1956 that agreed to the bill to finance the interstate highway system. The bill, rather than relying on tolls, provided for a special tax to finance the system. The identity of the two heads is not known. |
