Description | Half-length caricature shows conductor Leopold Stokowski, arms upraised over his head, with a baton in his left hand. Stokowski was born in London and attended the Royal College of Music and Queen's College, Oxford. He emigrated to the United States, and in 1905 Stokowski began work in New York City as the organist and choir director of St. Bartholomew's Church. In 1909 he began his conducting career with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. In 1912, he was appointed director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, where his creative work attracted attention. In 1940 Stokowski collaborated with Walt Disney to create the movie for which he is best known - Fantasia. He continued to conduct until 1972 when he returned to England. |
