Description | On March 7, 1945, Allied forces, lead by General Patton, took Cologne and the last remaining bridge over the Rhine, the Ludendorff Bridge near Remagen, winning a psychological battle over the German army. Within a week of crossing the Rhine seven U.S. divisions had established themselves east of the Rhine, preparing to drive further into Germany. Two months later, on May 7, the Germans surrendered unconditionally to the Allied forces. |
