[Senator Tom Connally gets rid of opposition to the United Nations Charter]

Description | Cartoon shows Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Tom Connally sweeping a lighted bomb, labelled "Charter Opposition," out the door of the committee room as Senator Arthur Vandenberg watches. Connally tells Vandenberg, "It's a dud!" In July 1945, Connally and Vandenberg successfully led a bipartisan effort to ratify the recently signed Charter establishing the United Nations. This was in marked contrast to the protracted proceedings in 1919 when the Senate refused to ratify the treaty establishing the League of Nations. |
