Description | Cartooon shows former presidential candidates John W. Davis, James M. Cox., and Alfred E. Smith relaxing and smoking cigars in the "Ex-Candidates Club." Smith, sitting on the floor, plays with blocks, building a structure reminiscent of the Empire State Building. (After his defeat in 1928, Smith had become president of the Empire State, then under construction.) A memo on the bulletin board reads "Franklin Roosevelt talked of for 1932." Cox comments, "After 1920, I never thought he'd ever be heard from again." Roosevelt had run on the Democratic ticket for Vice President with Cox in 1920, and the two had been crushed by the Republican candidate, Warren G. Harding. By 1930, however, Roosevelt had regained prominence as Governor of New York. |
