Description | Cartoon shows President Hoover as George Washington consoling a cold battered GOP elephant in the snow at Valley Forge. Hoover says, "Cheer up! Remember we won last time." In 1931, as the Depression fastened its grip on the country, Hoover spoke on Memorial Day at Valley Forge, urging the country to stand "steadfast in our great traditions" as it goes thru "another Valley Forge." The cartoonist suggests that the Republican Party, fearful of being blamed for the Depression, needs some consoling, too. |
