Description | Cartoon shows famed conservationist and former Pennsylvania governor Gifford Pinchot as a beekeeper with a hive labeled "Keystone GOP Hive." The bees, including one large bee labeled "Atterbury" are swarming. Pinchot comments, "They seem to be in an ugly mood." When Pinchot, a liberal Republican and ardent Prohibitionist, ran for a second term as governor in 1930, the conservative wing of the party, led by Pennsylvania Railroad President W.W. Atterbury, refused to support him. Pinchot won anyway with the help of many dry Democrats. |
