Description | Cartoon shows financier John J. Raskob writing a letter to Democratic politician James A. Farley reading, "Dear Jim -- Your demand tht Democrats wipe out the deficit is the Biggest thing you've done! -- I'm behind you 100%+" A stack of paper labled "IOUs Democracy" sits on his desk. A portrait of former Democratic presidential nominee Al Smith hangs on the wall. Raskob served as Democratic National Chairman during Smith's failed campaign for president in 1928. He was instrumental in raising huge sums for the party, much of it his own money. When Smith lost, the Democrats were saddled with a large debt, some of which was owed to Raskob. When Franklin D. Roosevelt won the nomination in 1932, Farley, the new Democratic National Chairman, pledged that the party would repay the debt. |
