Description | Cartoon shows Democratic National Committee Chairman John J. Raskob, sitting thoughtfully at his desk before his open check book. On the wall hangs a portrait of Dame Democracy, Berryman's symbol for the Democratic Party. Raskob muses, "Now really, is it the woman that pays and pays and pays?" Raskob, an extremely wealthy and conservative businessman, secured a dominant position in the party after the defeat of Al Smith, partly through his continued donations to the party. "The woman pays" is a reference to the Victorian idea that when a man and woman transgressed a moral law, it was the woman who paid. |
