Description | Cartoon shows Democratic National Committee Chairman John J. Raskob building an autogiro, a plane with a propeller on top, somewhat similar to the later helicopter. A paper reads, "Plans for 1932 Autogyro Plane." Miss Democracy, an old fashioned lady with corkscrew curls (and Berryman's symbol for the Democratic Party) cautions "Make it sure and strong, Johnny." The first autogiro was developed in 1919, but despite efforts to develop it for commercial use, it never found popular favor. After the Democrats were defeated in their campaign for the presidency in 1928, Raskob set out to transform the party by enlisting the newly registered immigrant groups in the large cities. Berryman warns that the resultant combined party must be put on a solid basis. |
