Description | Cartoon shows Democratic National Committee Chairman John J. Raskob as a little boy trying to feed his toy donkey alcohol. Behind him, Dame Democracy (an old-fashioned lady with cork screw curls, frilly clothes, and pantaloons) admonishes him, "Johnny, you little raskie, you must carefully read this." In her hand she holds a paper reading, "A Poll of Northwestern University men-students resulted in 80-20 victory in favor of the old fashioned girl who neither drank nor smoked." After Al Smith's defeat in the presidential election of 1928, Raskob worked to make the Democratic Party less dependent on conservative (and traditionally dry) South by enlisting the support of the newly registered immigrants in the larger cities in the North. Berryman points out that large portions of the party continue to support Prohibition. |
