Description | Cartoon shows a Democratic donkey and a GOP elephant marching together carrying signs supporting the Democratic Party. Another Democratic donkey and GOP elephant march in the opposite direction, carrying signs supporting the Republican Party. Behind them stand the ghosts of legendary Republican Party boss Mark Hanna and similarly powerful Democratic boss Arthur P. Gorman. In 1930, with the country buffeted by the problems of the Depression and competing views as to whether to repeal Prohibition, party loyalty frequently broke down. Berryman compares this situation to the days when Hanna and Gorman ruled their party members with an iron hand. |
