Description | Cartoon shows flamboyant Mayor Jimmy Walker of New York as a circus ringmaster shouting into a megaphone, "Help, Gents! There's something wrong." Behind him, a hand grasps a snarling Tammany Tiger by the neck, and another hand points at Walker. The tiger roars, "Graft." In 1931, a legislative committee headed by Judge Samuel Seabury investigated the graft-ridden government of New York City, dominated by the Democratic organization Tammany Hall. It then looked into evidence that popular Mayor Walker had received payments from businesses in return for favors. Walker declared his innocence, but resigned before action could be taken against him. |
