Description | Cartoon shows Uncle Sam roughly shoving notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone into a jail cell. Uncle Sam says, "Now, you know ME, Al." In 1931, after years of flouting the authorities, Capone was finally convicted by a federal jury of income tax evasion and sentenced to eleven years in prison. Berryman refers to the title of the famous collection of short stories by humorist Ring Lardner, featuring letters from Jack Keefe, a rookie baseball player, to his friend back home, Al Blanchard. |
