Description | Cartoon shows Governor Gifford Pinchot of Pennsylvania, in front of the U.S. Capitol, trying to drag a reluctant goat with one horn in the direction of the "Anti-Hoover Campaign." Berryman used a goat as the symbol for third parties, primarily the Progressive Party. In 1932, Pinchot urged other Independent Republicans to join him in opposing the re-election of President Hoover. Pinchot, known for his conservation ideas, had been one of the founders of the Progressive Party in 1912. He had little success in promoting the idea of a third party in 1932. |
