Description | Cartoon shows Columbia University President Nicholas Murray Butler in a bathing suit, sitting on the side of a tiny dry swimming hole, labeled "G.O.P. Damp Plunge -- Closed." On the other side of the fence, water splashes, a sign reads "Democratic Swimming Hole," and a voice says, "Gee, aint it nice and wet!" Dr. Butler glumly remarks, "I predicted that Al an' his pals would have all the fun." Butler was a strong opponent of Prohibition and was disappointed during the 1928 presidential campaign, when the Republican plank, while not endorsing Prohibition, pledged its enforcement. The Democratic plank was similar, but Democratic candidate Al Smith immediately repudiated it, calling for Prohibition repeal. |
