Description | Cartoon shows General Electric Chairman Owen D. Young, Governor Alfalfa Bill Murray of Oklahoma, Texas Congressman and Speaker of the House John Nance Garner, former Secretary of War Newton D. Baker, Governor Albert Ritchie of Maryland, and Senator James Hamilton Lewis of Illinois, accompanied by Miss Democracy, standing behind a wall, watching a dustup in the "'Happy Warrior' Training Camp." Miss Democracy, the cartoonist's symbol for the Democratic Party, covers her face in her hands. The men watching were all dark horse candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1932, the year in which the main contenders were former Governor of New York Al Smith and incumbent Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, The two men had been political allies. Roosevelt had bestowed on Smith the nickname, "The Happy Warrior," when he nominated him for President in 1924. By 1932, however, they had become rivals and bitter opponents, and their charges and countercharges threatened to hurt the chances of the Democratic Party in the forthcoming election. |
