Description | Cartoon shows "Miss Democracy," an elderly lady with corkscrew curls and glasses, clad in an old-fashioned full-length bathing suit, standing on the beach admiring Governor Al Smith of New York, who strikes a heroic pose in a bathing suit. Willian Jennings Bryan admonishes her to "keep away from that big city chap." Smith was one of the two prime candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1924. Three-time presidential candidate Bryan, was no longer an active candidate, but he still commanded the support of a substantial portion of the agrarian wing of the Democratic Party, a group that saw Smith as the exemplar of all they distrusted -- cities, anti-Prohibition, and the business and financial interests. |
