Description | Cartoon shows Dame Democracy as a band conductor holding her ears as the band behind her blairs out in a cacophany of noise, each one playing his own song. The tunes include "Protection Forever!!!" "Scrap the League," Lead Us Leagueward by W.W." "Down with the Tariff," and "Dear Old Government Ownership of Mine." William Jennings Bryan plays "Everybody Knows How Dry I Am!" on the tuba and the large drum is labeled "Famous Wet Band of New [York]." Ignored is the music "Democratic Harmony (Dream Song)." Berryman used Dame Democracy, an ugly old lady with corkscrew curls, glasses, and frilly clothes to represent the Democratic Party. In 1924, the party was splintered into conservative and liberal, wet and dry, and pro-League and anti-League groups. At the Democratic convention in June, it took 103 ballots to pick John W. Davis as the Democratic nominee for president. |
