Description | Cartoon shows Calvin Coolidge, drawn as a small Breton girl, and an old seaman, labeled "Senate," rowing a boat. Although both have their hands on the big oar (labeled "Executive Power"), it is clear that it is the old seaman who is rowing the boat. Berryman parodies a popular painting by Emile Renouf. When President Harding died suddenly in August 1923, he was sì³®ded as president by Calvin Coolidge who had been governor of Massachusetts. Coolidge was inexperienced in national affairs, and he was frequently frustrated by jealous Senators who had no intention of relinquishing any of their power. |
