Description | Cartoon shows Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Henry Cabot Lodge as a boxer, knocking out his opponent (labeled "Treaty Opposition"). Men in the audience (including Uncle Sam) cheer him on. Although Lodge had opposed ratification of the Treaty of Versailles, President Harding named him as a member of the delegation to the Washington Naval Conference in 1921. Lodge supported the provisions of the resulting pacts, limiting the construction of battleships and carriers and establishing a Far East security framework. In March 1922, he personally pushed ratification through the Senate. |
