Description | Cartoon shows William Gibbs McAdoo as a cowboy on the range as the sun sets, disconsolately reading the newspapers which report "'Al' Smith is being hailed as Democratic nominee in 1928," "U.S. Senator declares 'Al' is as good as nominated now!!" "New York mayoralty primary triumph for Smith," "Governor Smith the big factor in aiding Tammany win." McAdoo, representing the Western interests, and Al Smith, Governor of New York, had dominated the 1924 Democratic Convention, but neither could win the necessary votes and a compromise candidate had to be chosen. McAdoo hoped for another chance in 1928, but by the end of 1927, it was clear that Smith would be the nominee and McAdoo had withdrawn from the race. |
