Description | Cartoon shows Calvin Coolidge, wearing his ten-gallon hat, proudly holding a brace of pheasants and two turkeys. A sign on a tree reads "Georgia Hunting Preserves." When Coolidge became President it was well-known that he had little interest in sports. Before he left office, however, he had developed interests in fishing and horseback riding. In December 1928, he spent his Christmas vacation in Georgia, where he went hunting for the second time in his life on Sapelo Island. He was elated when he bagged three pheasants and two wild turkeys and carried his game home personally. Berryman contrasts this success with the fact that Georgia remained solidly in the Democratic fold. |
