Description | Cartoon shows President Coolidge congratulating Republican National Committee Chairman William Morgan Butler at the "I Do Not Choose Club." Former Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes and former Secretary of the Treasury William Gibbs McAdoo look on approvingly, while Senator Hiram Johnson of California glowers in the background. Four of the men in the picture renounced running for office in 1927. Coolidge shocked the country by announcing that he did "not choose to run" for reelection in August; McAdoo and Hughes withdrew their candidacies for president in the fall; and Butler announced he would not run for the Senate in December. Johnson, meanwhile, declared that he was the only Senator in the country that did not want to be president. |
